FOUNDER
Pedro Calla, the founder and owner of RUMI MAKI Boxing and Martial Arts began his career in the sport of boxing at age 14 in Lima, Peru, where early on he rose to be the reigning national champion in the country for seven years straight. Recognized by the President of Peru for his representation in international tournaments and by the National Boxing Federation of Peru as the top boxer in the country. In his representation of Peru as the captain of the national team, Pedro participated in international tournaments for nearly a decade, including the Pan-American Games, Pre-Olympic Trials, The Pacific Tournaments and Pre-Pan-American games where Pedro earned gold medals, and the ODESUR South American Tournament where he earned a silver medal. Pedro also pursued the academic side of fitness, studying Sports Science in Cayetano Heredia Medical University, completing over 20 courses in sports medicine and training methodology. Alongside his own athletic development, Pedro has been a fitness trainer for others for over 30 years, working as a personal trainer, fitness instructor, and boxing trainer. He has additionally worked to expand his knowledge of martial arts combat outside of boxing, seeking out training in submission wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Muay Thai, all of which he used successfully in MMA cage fights. In his current role as a boxing and fitness trainer for the last fifteen years, Pedro has continued to push his own fitness limits, along with those of his students, training for marathon, Spartan, and Gladiator races. This represents his philosophy that it is important to continuously learn and grow in the world of fitness, and so he is constantly studying the science and medicine of the field, seeking input from other trainers and experts, and adapting his techniques based on the needs of his students.

ELIZABETH LARA
She is the receptionist for our Palatine location, she has been in the fitness industry for over 10 years. She started as a student in boxing with us back in 2010, later on she became our strength and conditioning instructor. Elizabeth also has a degree in veterinary medicine.

ANDRES COLLAZO
He is one of our beginners boxing coaches. He has been boxing for 3 years and competing at amateur level now for a year and a half. At 17 years old he has been a Illinois Silver Gloves Champion in 2023 and a Chicago Golden Gloves Champion in 2024. Andres has been teaching our kids and adult beginners boxing class for 8 months now and has shown to be a dedicated trainer with a very didactic way of teaching fundamentals to kids and young ones wanting to get started in this sport.

IVAN NERI
Is a highly accomplished Taekwondo instructor, holding a 4th Dan Kukkiwon Certified Black Belt. With over 10 years of teaching experience, Ivan has dedicated his career to mentoring students of all ages and skill levels, helping them develop both their martial arts abilities and personal discipline. As the former owner and founder of I.N. Martial Arts, he built a reputation for excellence in instruction and fostering a supportive, goal-oriented training environment. Ivan’s passion for Taekwondo, combined with his extensive experience and leadership, continues to inspire and shape the next generation of martial artists.
Devin
Coach Devin has been boxing for 8 years and been part of the Rumi maki family for over 4 years . He Won Wisconsin golden gloves in 2021 and Chicago golden gloves in 2022. He fought at the nationals championship in 2022 , was ranked 5th in the country as an amateur boxer, has had 60 amateur fights and 3 as a professional fighter.

GIULIANO LOPEZ
Co-owner of Rumi Maki Boxing in McHenry, began his martial arts career at 15 years old in Palatine, IL. He started his career in capoeira while cross-training in boxing and kickboxing. Coming from a martial arts background, he decided to pursue a career in the health and fitness industry as a personal trainer and manager for various health clubs in Illinois and Wisconsin. Today, he currently serves as a boxing and fitness trainer at our McHenry location. Giuliano loves to participate in gladiator and spartan races, as well as half marathons, to help maintain his fitness level. Over the years, he has continued to hone his martial arts skills by attending training camps around the world, including Thailand, Brazil, and Peru.
GABRIELA
Is a dedicated Taekwondo instructor with over 10 years of experience in martial arts. As a 1st-degree black belt, she has honed her skills in the discipline, demonstrating a strong commitment to both personal growth and the art of Taekwondo. Gabriela has spent the last two years sharing her passion and knowledge with students, teaching them not only the techniques of Taekwondo but also the values of discipline, respect, and perseverance. With a deep understanding of the physical and mental aspects of the sport, she inspires and empowers others to reach their full potential.
